Today, there’s nothing remotely mystical about what
can happen to you on the street if you’re not
prepared.
No magic potion, no deep stance and not
bellowing kiai will save your life if you don’t have
the tools to back it up.
The way we teach self-defense at Competitive
Edge Karate is to emphasize techniques which will
work in certain situations.
We like to break them down into two types of
fighting - stand up and grappling.
Stand-up fighting utilizes punches, elbows, kicks
and knees to take out opponents and is very
effective against multiple opponents.
If your opponent wrestles you down to the
ground (which happens a lot in street fights), then
some of your kicks and punches are neutralized.
Grappling, or
ground fighting techniques, becomes a must when you
are the smaller or weaker opponent and someone is
applying their weight to you while down on the
ground.
Self-defense training should be 50 percent physical
and 50 percent mental.
We approach the physical aspect with street
proven techniques designed to work the first time
and every time in the real world. We teach students
to use mental awareness as an asset.
In other words, treat fear as an ally.
This is especially emphasized in women’s
classes.
Martial Arts will not teach you not to have fear, it
teaches you how to accept fear and how to deal with
it.
If you understand there is going to be fear and that
you are going to be scared, then you can use that to
build up your momentum to your advantage.
